Canadian all-femme band The Peelies have been pushing out tunes for a while but have recently had their profile heightened in Australia due to a deal with gaga digi. An old Peelies track, 'Does And Hoes', turned up on a recent gaga showcase compilation (with The Peelies confusingly credited as Pelie) and stole the show with their tear-down-the-walls-of-the-garage-to-make-way-for-a-carport buzz roll. A bit of digging turned out more recent output - a split eight-track album with Jesuslesfilles. Head to their Bandcamp page and purchase or sign up for a free download of 'Medication'. Having fallen for Melbourne "folk noir" outfit The Orbweavers' Graphite And Diamonds album back in 2009, it took another two years to get to see them live. Thanks to Melbourne Music Week, popping my Orbweavers cherry was a tasteful and gentle experience. And, in a church. Armed with new material from their recent Loom album, they nestled perfectly into a night curated by Mistletone. Later in the evening the church quivered in feedback from the always raucous Beaches and grew cathedral-of-sound size for Htrk's mesmerising headline slot. So to celebrate churches being the new nightclub, some Orbweavers.

Although never much of a fanatic for The Beatles, for some reason their 1966 song 'Eleanor Rigby' has always been a must-hear-at-least-every-few-weeks kinda song. Recorded for their pre-psychedelia album Revolver, it captured a mood of despair that was immaculately underplayed by an incidental movie music-type arrangement of a string quartet. Throw in the comedown Tuesday lyrics "waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door" and you've got what's known as 'haunting'.

And then there were the covers... give the song a unique singing voice and a spartan arrangement and it can't go that wrong. [But there are those who can make it ordinary, see B.o.B.'s 'Lonely People', The Fray's overwrought reading and Twisted Sister's Eddie Ojeda doing a metal take on it.]

Having first heard the song as recorded in 1970 by Adelaide mod-turned-heavy-rock band Zoot, it was a crap-your-pants moment to discover that 'Eleanor Rigby' was not originally intended as a metal anthem. Years later another moment was had to find out that between the original recording and Zoot's version, a dozen or so major artists had tackled the song. There were the mandatory psych-out covers (Vanilla Fudge), soul renderings (Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles), spoken word re-imaginings (Steve Allen, Tony Bennett) and, of course, folk takes (Bobby Gentry, The Free Design, Joan Baez).

But it's the version by PP Arnold that has lodged itself as the one-that-must-be-heard-above-all-others. Released in 1968, at a time when the young British singer was working with The Small Faces (that's her on 'Tin Soldiers'), starting out on a career that would lead to her having a house hit with Beatmasters, singing with KLF, forming a musical partnership with ex-Blockhead Chaz Jankel, becoming Roger Waters' back-up vocalist and using Primal Scream as her backing band. With a CV like that, her 'Eleanor' is as you'd expect: simple, soulful and depressing as all shit. Although Richie Havens had recorded it in a similar style in 1967, Arnold's voice possessed a purity and innocence that made the lyrics ever-so-much-more of a downer. [Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan was once scolded by knuckle-jockey judge Dicko for attempting a soul version of 'Eleanor Rigby', screeching that no one should ever mess with a Beatles song... would like to hear him say that to PP Arnold, Sarah Vaughan, Shirley Bassey and the others who have 'messed' with it.]

And, in recent years more and more versions have made themselves known: from a recent Soulwax 'Tour De Eleanor Rigby' cut-up of Kraftwerk and The Beatles' original, through to another 1968 version, this time by Booker T And The MGs, and. most surprisingly, an Italo disco-flavoured remake from the non-Italo Uranium. All these people befriending Eleanor, yet still so lonely...

Long before The Mavis's became known for indie ballad 'Cry' (Triple J Hottest 100 in 1998), they were scaring the locals in the regional Victorian township of Ballarat. The band of outsiders were banging out post-goth, psych-punk ten years before they released their Venus Returning album in 1996. With glam siblings Matt and Beki Thomas leading the charge, early Mavis sounds were influenced by art punk grrrls X-Ray Spex (the cover of their Pink Pills album was a homage to Spex' Germ Free Adolescents album cover), The B-52's, The Raincoats and The Slits. But little of that early material made it to the recorded state. The track 'Stepping' surfaced on underground band comp Screaming At The Mirror in 1989 (alongside other fondly remembered, by a few, alt.acts like Clowns Smiling Backwards, Scarecrow Tiggy and Pray TV). The band broke up in 2000 and there has long since been talk of reformations and reissues (although Matt Thomas now has the projects Video Video and The Blow Waves on the go while sister Beki has her band Beki And The Bullets). But finally a compilation of early tracks has been pulled together and released through iTunes - Kids In The Basement Vol 1 features ten cuts of chaotic DIY noise but with the striking voices, and harmonies, of the Thomas kids already finding shape. Some tracks are from when the band were still school kids in their mid-teens. Listen to the wonky post-punk, Flying Nunesque 'Productivity None' (which the liner notes explains is about "the unexpected") and the wiry new wave 'Stepping' (about "walking the streets of Ballarat at night"). And, from 1998 (not on the Basement set), the later shinier Mavis's of 'Naughty Boy' where they still wore their Ballarat-pariah status proudly.

New Chapter For The Apartments

The Apartments releasing new material is rare. The Apartments gigging is rarer still. Tonight the reclusive Milton Walsh came to Melbourne's Toff to launch 'Black Ribbons', released by Chapter Music. The former Brisbane gentleman came out to sing... and chat.

Originally part of the Qld music culture that gave us The Go-Betweens and Ed Kuepper, who formed Laughing Clowns, (Milton Walsh spent fleeting moments in both those bands too), the melancholy poet has been mostly ignored here while gathering a respectable following in France.

The Apartments set was sparse musically but opulent in content. Backed with just a few players supplying backing vocals, trumpet, guitar and drums (former Moodist and current Lurid Yellow Mist, Clare Moore), the band swept through decades of romantic bittnerness. Inbetween songs Milton Walsh spun entertaining, tangental yarns that make the stage banter of Jarvis Cocker and Dave Graney (who was in attendence) seem like brief public announcements in comparison.

There were stunning versions of 'Sunset Hotel' (from 1985's The Evening Visits... released on Rough Trade), 'The Goodbye Train' (from 1995's Drift) and the new single. A tender reading of 'Mister Somewhere' closed the night and Milton Walsh left the stage leaving all those troubadour-come-latelies in his immaculately-preserved dust.

On Friday 28 October, Canyons' Keep Your Dreams album finally drops. It's been almost two years since the epic was first rumoured but it was worth the wait. The album not only features guest vocals from '80s new waver Paul Roberts of Sniff 'N' The Tears (the classic 'Driver's Seat') but also Tame Impala's Kevin Parker (one of the first bands released on Canyons' label Hole In The Sky). A teaser track has been kicking around, also featuring a guest vocalist - one of this blog's favourites - Nite Jewel's Ramona Gonzalez.

Huxton Creepers Still Killing It

Melbourne's Huxton Creepers very quickly leapt from the early '80s garage revival scene (which also included Olympic Sideburns, Tombstone Hands and others you can hear if you are lucky enough to find a copy of this) into the beer barns. By '89 they'd burnt out and were reportedly unhappy when major label interference saw them release a very polished cover of Manfred Mann's 'Pretty Flamingo'. The band played a reunion gig last night at the Corner (with other local '80s alt.icons The Moffs and Ups And Downs). Leaving 'Pretty Flamingo' out of the set, they instead included covers of Neil Diamond's 'Cherry Cherry', Flaming Groovies' 'Shake Some Action' and Blondie's 'Union City Blue'. They made their point. Most significantly though, they reminded us that they possessed a powerhouse rhythm section and mighty chantalong choruses in power pub anthems 'I Will Persuade You' and 'My Cherie Amour'. They could also jam out with the best of them, and last night included a "seventeen-minute" version of 'King Of The Road' in their encore that managed to pay homage to Them and The Doors. But still it's hard to go past their early efforts such as the jangly single 'The Murderess' from 1985.

Having recently become smitten with NZ Arch Hill recording artists, punk grrrls (and guy), Street Chant on their recent visit to Aus, it became clear that this label has well and truly stamped itself as a fitting contemporary of Flying Nun. Run by members of former Nun bands Jean Paul Sartre Experience and Superette, Arch Hill not only released The Bats last album (they are now back at Flying Nun with their new album Free All Monsters) but also past Nun acts The Clean and David Kilgour. But they can also count the post-Nun band Surf City amongst their numbers. So in playing catch-up on the label (y'know how it is, now have to pretend to having known all about them from way back in the day) a care package of Arch-ness was acquired. The pack included a new release from NZ icon Kilgour and also music by newer bands Ghost Wave and the jangly Family Cactus. All top quality but a definite stand-out is the seven-track Ghost Wave EP. Released back in April, the EP is a delirious mix of fuzz pop and Beach Boys harmonies - a sort of Underground Jesus And Mary Byrd Lovers Chain. Having missed this upon its issue date it's a relief to finally catch up on one of 2011's highlights - here's one of the EP's most outstanding moments, the haze of guitars that is 'Hippy'.

New War Breaks Out

Melbourne band New War marked the release of their 12" 'Ghostwalking' with an impressive show at the Phoenix Public House last night (Sat 24 Sep). Signed to American label Fast Weapons (they were responsible for a Thurston Moore/Talk Normal split 7" earlier this year), New War create an intensely rhythmic sound that mixes the post-punk renderings of Mutiny-period Birthday Party, King Trigger, Plays With Marionettes and pre-Breakfast Club Simple Minds into something profoundly fresh.

Having mutated out of US-based band Shoplifting (which featured Chromatics associate Devin Welch and Gossip's Hannah Blilie), Chris Pugmire and Melissa Stock have brought their music back to Melbourne and joined up with Bird Blobs drummer Steve Masterson and SIR's Jesse Shepherd (also a one-time member of The Ancients with Henry Krips, aka Henry Wagons).

Fast Weapons, the label run by Gossip's Nathan Howdeshell, has issued New War's 12" with remixes by Gossip and HTRK. 'Ghostwalking' is produced by Lindsay Gravina (Ripe, Magic Dirt, Rowland S Howard, HTRK, Cosmic Psychos).

Hit It & Quit It have released their first radio compilation. Co-hosted by Detroit-native Recloose and Auckland City's Frank Booker, this weekly two hour show is always fresh and always on point. The compilation features 20 tracks (the majority exclusives) and is due out in three formats; unmixed digital download (out now via Juno, iTunes and bunch of other digital sites), mixed CD (due out soon) and 2LP Serato vinyl.

Kid Creole Rocks Out With His Coconuts Out

Kid Creole And The Coconuts were leaders of the early '80s funk scene and gave underground NY label ZE Records (Suicide, Was [Not Was], James Chance] their biggest sales successes. In the UK they were lauded and had a string of Latin/big band-influenced hits ('Me No Pop I', 'Stool Pigeon', 'Annie I'm Not Your Daddy'). Led by August Darnell, who took on the Hollywood gangster-style Kid Creole persona onstage, the band's large membership turned over fast due to in-fighting and money woes. Post-1985 the band fell out of favour but Darnell kept the brand alive churning out the occasional album and moving his base from the US to Sweden.

The band's big funky swing has never really dated as it never really sounded of its time back when they were flying high. But it took Australian club lads Pnau to put Creole back on the radar for the decade-of-rave generation not familiar with the wonky beats so loved by Generation ZE. In 2002, Pnau invited Darnell to guest on what everyone thought would be their BIG second album Again. The single failed and was dropped from the album (which also stiffed). But the wonderful Latin house cut 'Una Noche', featuring Darnell, can still be found with a bit of digging. It's Pnau's finest acheivement.

In 2011, Darnell is back with an album on Strut (Horse Meat Disco, Dennis Coffey, Mulatu Astatke) and with production by disco emperor Brennan Green. First track to be previewed is 'We're Rocking Out Tonight'. And, Green does get The Coconuts to rock. Co-penned by Andrew Butler (Hercules And Love Affair and the mr.intl label), the cut is pure Kid Creole showy-biz with a bassline that should get done for indecent exposure and added lead breaks that give the band a strangely retro-now sound. An album, I Wake Up Screaming is out Sep 27.

Chris 'Bam Bam' Westbrook has put his Roland TB-303 synthesizer up for sale on eBay. For a 'buy it now' price of only USD$10,000, you too can live out your acid house dreams. The silver box's previous owner was little know Chicago native Marshall Jefferson, who managed to bang out the acid classics 'I've Lost Control' (Sleezy D) and 'No Way Back' (Adonis), before moving it onto Bam Bam (for 150 bucks!).

This follows Jesse Saunders attempt to sell the original master tape of 'On & On' on eBay a few weeks back (the auction was passed in).

Recently adding 'outlawed blogger' to his CV; music journalist, film critic and broadcaster Anthony Carew champions the kinds of artists who make 'indie' seem mainstream. However, penning for a variety of street press as well as Rolling Stone, Melbourne broadsheet daily The Age and online hub aboutmusic, Carew declares that he has spoken to both "the incredibly famous" and "the instantly obscure". His musical taste is as immaculate as his on-air manner (he hosts a weekly program on public radio station 3RRR). And, despite his virtual rubbing of shoulders with the blogospherical underbelly, we dare play host to a set of tunes he has spliced together for the normally squeaky-clean DoaDD blog. So with the possibilty that his We People Space With Phantoms blog may never return, we offer you this fix of Carewebbery.

British hip hop's most celebrated exponent Roots Manuva seems to have done a 'Dizzee' and got down with the club kids. However when Manuva does it, it's not with Dizzee-style collab partners like Armand Van Helden or Shakira. Nup, Manuva rolls with a higher class of dance boffins altogether. And, that's why one of the year's catchiest UK funky tracks witnesses the fitness of grime upstart Toddla T and the grandad of indie dub Andrew Weatherall on 'Watch Me Dance' with Manuva. Grimey Sheffield lad T has worked with Manuva previously (eg 2008's Slime & Reason), before T became a mainstream go-to remixer through work with Tinchy Stryder, Hot Chip and Ladyhawke. In the meantime, Weatherall has quietly been releasing some of his best work in recent years despite many considering his golden period as the time he spent remixing indie bands in the '90s. Weatherall's work with Harvey, Fuck Buttons and David Holmes, as well as his 2009 A Pox On The Pioneers album, is not only in a league of its own - other players can't even get in the draft for it. Manuva + T + Weatherall = superfunkpunkdub. Listen to the remix, out now thru Ninja Tune, and then wrap your eyes around the clip of the OG radio cut - Manuva looks like he fell into a Clavin Harris set.

What I Learnt About Australia

I recently came back from a three week trip to Europe. Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam. Sometimes it's nice to be away from home, but whenever I'm overseas I inevitably find myself looking-out for references of home. Not because I feel particularly homesick. It's just interesting to see how different lands and people see your home. So, how do Europeans see Australians? Or more accurately, how did I see Australia in Europe?

On more than one occasion I was asked where I was from, and this was uniformly followed by "Australia? That's so far away". Which, I guess is pretty true. After almost 20 hours of economy air travel (one way), there's no room to hide. I managed to catch 'Crocodile Dundee' on both French and German television (dubbed into each respective language). In France it seemed to be on repeat for a few nights. Channel 9 rural drama-soap 'Mcleod's Daughters' was also on French TV. On German TV, I saw a talent show contestant attempt his best Brian Johnson / AC/DC impression. He sang 'Thunderstruck'. The judges laughed. He didn't win.

In Prenzlauer Berg, near where I stayed in Berlin, there was an Australian pub called 'Uluru Resort'. I didn't venture inside, but from the other side of the street it looked pretty busy. The English-Australian accent might be a beautiful and lyrical thing, but in a sea of French, German and Dutch, it did stick-out a little. I came across a few fellow Australians on my travels, and almost every time, I heard them before I saw them.

In record stores I dug up quite a few Australian artists. Black discs from INXS, Severed Heads and Hunters & Collectors. One store in Paris had a stack of Kylie picture discs filed away under the racks. Records from groups like The Triffids, The Church and The Go-Betweens also popped up. It was nice to see Robert, Lindy and Grant looking back at me (on the cover of 'Send Me A Lullaby') in a record store in Amsterdam. Sure, they might not have been as popular as Mick's knife or Linda Kozlowski in a pair of g-string bathers, but at least they made it over.

Umm Yeah, It's Hurricanes

The last great band to come out of Mount Gambier was '80s literate rockers Moodists (well, band founders Dave Graney and Clare Moore at least). From that SA town we now welcome Ross De Chene Hurricanes, a two-piece garage outfit, one-part surf punk/one-part Jonathan Richman rock'n'roll. The Hurricanes have previously cited fellow South Australians, and heritage listed '60s rockers, Masters Apprentices as an influence (alongside The Saints and Super Wild Horses), and it was heard in the raw sonics they achieved Saturday night, supporting Dirt Farmer at the Order. In light of the success by bands Bass Drum Of Death, DZ Deathrays and Jeff The Brotherhood, could 2011 be the year of the power garage duo?

Twitchin' For Sons & Daughters

Never too far from dance beats in the past, Scottish band Sons & Daughters have moved a little closer on their forthcoming Mirror, Mirror album (through Domino). Their last album The Gift was a fury of indie guitars and fiery beats produced by former Suede man Bernard Butler. But the band were already dabbling in the darkside having played at Glasgow club night Optimo and covering Adamski's 'Killer'. First Mirror cut previewed was the wonky wave of 'Breaking Fun' (think Fire Engines), followed by the Shriekback-esque 'Silver Spell'. Now they've unveiled a 'Silver Spell' remix by Optimo's JD Twitch, who has also produced the album at the infamous Green Door studio (check last year's Green Door Kids comp).

Death Of A Disco Dancer - Poly Styrene R.I.P.

UK punk icon Poly Styrene has died, age 53, on the eve of releasing her comeback album Generation Indigo (produced by Youth). As the lead singer of X Ray Spex she forged a unique place in punk - while others were screaming and being noisy, Styrene was being insightful, screaming and noisy. While best known for in-our-faces 'Oh Bondage Up Yours' and 'I Am A Cliche', it was later single 'Germ Free Adolescents' that unnerved the most. Her single 'Virtual Boyfriend' was only recently released.

I Oh You deliver the no-fuss goods again with the new release from Brisbane duo DZ Deathrays (pictured above at Maggie Mae's, Austin TX). The thrash-out-with-your-balls-smashed-about band were simply known as DZ before their recent trip to the States, where they discovered they'd been booked into dubstep showcases due to confusion with the Canadian DZ. Problem solved with the addition of Deathrays to their name. The band were one of the Aus showcase highlights at SxSW from where they have returned home armed with the Brutal Tapes EP. The extended player features new single 'Rad Solar' and previous breakout 'Gebbie Street'. And while it may be difficult to mistake them with their former dubstep namesake in sound, the EP finds them dabbling in remixes (including a bare knuckles mix of 'Rad' by Gold Coast team Surecut Kids). But don't be fooled by the inclusion of two House Party Versions of tracks - that's 'house party' as in 'recorded live at a house party', they haven't yet gone four-to-the-floor (but we're ready for it when they are, Surecut Kids pub club sound may act as a gateway genre) - and one of DZ was donning a Midnight Juggernauts tee in Austin.

SXSW - Day 3; Losing Sleep

When a day starts with Edwyn Collins and ends witnessing raw New Orleans bounce at "Austin's only gay nightclub", even the inbetween disappointments (and there were many) can't seem that bad. To see Collins perform feels like the greatest privilege - he suffered a near-fatal cerebral hemorrhage in 2005 - and his booming baritone manages to warm the cold atmosphere of the convention room he's playing today. The band performs seated, and drummerless. Collins' is still unable to use the right side of his body and when talking inbetween songs has to carefully annunciate his words in a sing-song style. It has hard for this not to inform the emotion of the proceedings. But it does. And it is hard not to be wiping away tears as he sings the words of his classic Orange Juice hit, "Rip it up and start again" ('Rip It Up'). Collins has done just that and the new songs that he is 'starting again' with are the best of his solo career. 'Losing Sleep' and 'What Is My Role?' are as potent here in acoustic form as they are on the Losing Sleep album. This set has the affect of making you wonder 'WHY THE FUCK IS THE WORLD NOT GETTING THIS?'. But perhaps that's not what Collins is about. He ends the set with his 1994 hit 'A Girl Like You'. Collins leaves the stage to a standing ovation.

Today is the Australian showcase at Maggie Mae's, beginning with the notorious Aussie BBQ (which tours the US this time every year). Brisbane's Sampology finds that he has explain his VJing set to the newbies here but they are soon getting it. However there's little dancing here as most are transfixed by his visuals which run the gamut - from Kermit The Frog to Kenny "Fucken" Powers and even some Little Shop Of Horrors. Impressive both in style and the lack of copyright lawsuits so far. The band getting a lot of the Aus buzz is DZDeathrays, the powerthrash pop duo make a huge, exhilarating noise, it's hard not to take notice. The highlight of the locals though is Wolf & Cub. Although rumours ran rampant not long ago of an imminent split, what we saw here was a band on a career high. The band have fleshed out their sound and are now exploring an almost Primal Screamesque element to their post-angular rock'n'roll. It sits well with their twin-drummer pummeling. A definite SxSW highlight. Across at ND, Sydney's The Holidays are another playing a career best. Their glistening guitar pop is now sounding immaculate onstage and their touring percussionist is adding a groove that hopefully finds him a permanent Holidayer.

It's about now that the day's series of disappointments unfold. Comedian Donald Glover cancels, with the audience only informed after sitting through an hour of warm-up folk (not entirely disastrous though, as that number includes the vicious Amy Shewmer); schedule delays/clashes mean missing Kurt Vile, Death From Above 1978, Mount Kimbie and Big Freedia; and Canada's Grimes does not live up to all the hype (just another baby doll voice over some lo-fi electronica).

Back on track, at the Red Eyed Fly there's Exene Cervenka. The former member of US band X (who reformed and toured the States last year) has honed her storytelling and guitar playing ways into a rootsy country style that is as arresting as her work with her influential punk buddies. A less succesful icon outing is Yoko Ono at Elysium. Desite her rare performance including son Sean with members of Deerhoof and Wilco, it's a case of the event overwhelming the music. The gig is rammed with douchebags, aging LA/NY scenesters who look like their faces fell off twenty years ago but who still rudely, and loudly, demand attention (they all claim to be friends of 'John'). An 'official' photographer fires a laser at anyone daring to take photos of the gig, an act so douche-like itself that people who were obeying the 'No photos' notice originally begin taking photos in defiance. So Ono's wails to an alt.adult contemporary soundtrack were mainly going unnoticed. This gig was just for folks who no doubt will be boasting for years that they were there. [If someone ever makes that boast to you, ask them what songs she played. Bet they can't tell you.]

But the night doesn't end on that sour note. Across town at Kiss & Fly there is raw-as-fuck bounce to be heard. The audience hangs off every one of Vockah Redu sexual commands and party calls as his dancers shake more than their money makers and their non-money-makers. It's frenetic shit and light years more innovative than anything Ono and her Plastic supergroup were messing with.

SXSW - Day 2; High Highs And Lows

While gigs that fall outside the official SxSW jurisdiction tend to be where you find more left-of-centre bands, it's also where you experience schedules not being kept to and slapdash set-ups. While this Friday in Austin is plagued with missing bands because of unofficial gigs not keeping to schedule, the day also begins with some disappointing soundbleed at a non-SxSW gig at Betsy's Bar. NY band High Highs (who included an expat Aus amongst their numbers) struggle in the back room against the overflow of live music from the front room. High Highs play a quiet, thoughtful form of indie pop (not too far from the likes of Lotus Eaters) but they play on unperturbed, ending on a simple but stunning note with their shimmering single 'Open Season'.

Determination to see if Tune-Yards really can be as good as everyone says (coz the recordings don't quite convince) means a half-hour wait in line outside the Other Records party on the lush lawns of the French Legation Museum). Then it's another half-hour-plus wait as electronic pin-up boy James Blake drags his set out. He sounds like Paul Young - that's not healthy. But Tune-Yards are worth the wait as they launch into Onoesque, ESG-influenced arty funk track to open with. While their percussion-fuelled cuts are more enchanting than their freaky folk forays, it makes for a pleasant afternoon in the sun.

Hardly Art (Sub Pop imprint) talent Colleen Green is nothing short of astounding on stage at Red 7. Tiny and unassuming looking, she lets loose with buzzing riffs and wry lyrics. It all comes together best for the Ramones-inspired 'I Wanna Be Degraded'. Punx leader Hunx watches close to front of stage - Green has received the nod from the garage queen.

Witnessing Chilean singer/multi-instrumentalist Gepe at Prague is nothing short of a religious experience. His unpretensious mix of folk and lo-fi electro is romantic and joyous. Gepe had this basement-rammed crowd swooning by set's end and received the loudest calls for an encore heard so far this SxSW. And while the encore was disallowed (definitely an official SxSW gig), for the English-only speakers in the room we at least learnt that his glorious song 'Por La Ventana', translates as "By The Window'.

Checking out Toro Y Moi's set of psyched-out Balearica at Klub Krucial was cut short due to venue's sweatbox atmospheric - but it at least suited the Moi mood. And a visit to locals Ringo Deathstarr at Easy Tiger was also cut short but that was due to their shitness. Their sub-JAMC fuzz and bad singing could have almost been bearable if it wasn't for tantrum about bad equipment. And the homophobic, "Surely there's someone out there who sells amps? Give me an amp, fag" was a sure sign too much time had been wasted on them already.

At Latitude 30, the air was heavy with industry expectations for UK buzz band Esben & The Witch. But they delivered their primal goth musings by the Virgin Prune-ful. Bleak melodies, squalling vocals and raucous drumming - with the drums somehow ending up in the audience for the night's closing song - filled the room and scared the bejesus out of non-believers.

New Orleans mod-touched indie outfit Generationals have all the songs that one-hipster-wonders Foster The People don't have. The songs are catchy and crisp. The look is study hall geek. The live show at Mi Casa Cantina is sweaty and rapturous. They prove there is far more to them than 'When They Fight, They Fight' (as heard on that car insurance ad), although live that song is BIG singa/jumpalong fave. Closing with the ridiculously alluring 'Trust', it's hard not to head off towards the freeways of Austin wishing that SxSW official gigs weren't so strict on times afterall.

SXSW - Day 1; The Austin Strikes Back

HBO LAUNCH OF SEASON 2 TREME

The first song I hear upon arrival in the US (playing in a cab outside LAX) is Beach Boys' 'God Only Knows'. That's gotta be a good sign. Less than 24 hours later, it's the Ghost Room and HBO have chosen Austin's SxSW, the world's biggest music conference/festival as the place to launch the new season of their New Orleans musical/drama Treme. Not only does it begin with one of the show's signature second line celebrations (which goes a little awry at the end as someone is knocked down by a car) but inside the Orleansesque Ghost Room we are immersed in the jazz keys of Henry Butler. There are no Treme cast to be seen but stepping outside, there's Mark Boone Junior, star of US biker series Sons Of Anarchy... he looks just as scary off screen as he does in the show - note: doesn't look like asking for an autograph is a good idea.

A long trek east from Austin's CBD (past the long lines into the Fader party) and the Thrasher party is in full swing at the Scoot Inn. While skaters do their skatey thing on a ramp in one outdoor area, hardcore bands entertain those doing non-skatey things in another outdoor area. But it's what's inside the dank, dark bar inside that interests most. "I wanna fuck every skater out there," pants queer indie icon Hunx, leader of the Hunx & His Punx pack. The crowd screams encouragement - Hunx ignores them, he's already moved on to shaking up a warm beer and spraying across those of us in the front rows. Yep, Hunx... guaranteed to leave you sticky. As Hunx powers through his anthems 'Cruising' and 'Hey Rocky', the room is over-heating. "How many songs do we have to do?" Hunx asks nobody in particular. "Ten!"... "No. Fucken. Way." But with the help of this all-girl edition of His Punx, Hunx delivers a more-than-satisfying set of lo-fi girl group fun.

But there's no escaping the Scoot sauna room as Nashville garage duo Jeff The Brotherhood enter the stage next. JTB do that wondrous thing where two folk make the kinda noise that you'd expect from at least twice that amount of folk onstage. The sheer energy as they tear through cuts like 'U Got The Look' is just too hard to resist and some old style moshing breaks out upfront. The moshing only stops to make a path for one of the Brotherhood to make a run to bar for a bar-top guitar solo. All hail the Brotherhood. Back in town, in fact, at the heart of the festival in the convention centre, local indie psych outfit White Denim work hard to win a tough room of 'industry types' sitting back with that 'come on, prove yourself' vibe dripping off them. White Denim prove themselves. A dash through a blur of bands follows before the night's most looked-forward-too moment, Nite Jewel at the Bat Bar in Austin's main music venue strip, 6th Street. The LA team DO NOT disappoint and their wonky disco stylings are captivating. Love is experienced in this room.

Over at Emo's, The Kills played a stripped down (yes, it's possible to strip their minimal rock further), no nonsense set (none of those usual Kills dramas played out tonight) of new material. The audience is torn between those loudly bitching about the changes in direction and those of us ready to order the new album Blood Pressures now. Following a trail of winklepickers and 'taches leads to the 'it' gig of the night, Gayngs at Mohawk. Suspicions of this Minneapolis indie supergroup (on record this collection of blue-eye soul boys from Bon Iver and the likes sounded a tad ironic) subside by the time the ten-piece hit their achingly beautiful take on Godley & Creme's 'Cry'. Eventually, after a parade of guest vocalists that includes Har Mar Superstar, the crowd aren't just eating out of their hands, they are sucking the sweat of their fingertips. It ends with all the boys on stage getting their tops off (surprisingly not Har Mar - the man usually leading onstage strips) and a giant lovefest breaks out as Gayngs kiss, hug and generally touch each other for the night's finale.

The Ryat Act

Fronted by Christina Ryat, the Ryat project was a solo concern when it began in 2006 but in 2009 she roped in multi-instrumentalist Tim Conley. Together they specialise in deformed rhythms and off-kilter melodies that can be just as Moloko as it is The Creatures at times. The pair have just released the album Avant which features the seriously conking 'Superficial Friction'. They are also intending to release a reworked version, Avant Gold Remixed, in April - with remixes by Mikronesia and DJ Statik. The pair's pedigree has found them working with a varied lot of esteemed muso-types, including King Britt, DJ Logic, Bernie Worrell (of Material and Funkadelic fame) and Mike Watt (Minutemen, Stooges, J Mascis + The Fog, Ciccone Youth, etc). A recent collaboration with Taylor ("son of Bobby") McFerrin was released on Brainfeeder (home to Flying Lotus, Mr Oizo and The Gaslamp Killer) and their track 'A Place In My Heart' appeared on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers comp last year.

Formerly of the much overlooked '90s house team Those Norwegians (the act originally included Torbjorn Brundtland, later of Royksopp) and part of Meanderthals (with Idjut Boys), Rune Lindbaek has released a neat set of beardy disco cuts/edits/bootlegs. The Discofil Desperados Presents Rune Lindbaek album (through Discofil) delivers some of the Nordic DJ/producer's favourite balearic rarities/weirdness. Of special note is the prog funk grunter 'Disco Jock'.

Minaj(j) Vs Kim

The Kills mixtape from the house of jj has been kicking round since Xmas Eve last year. The Swedish duo cut-up familiar samples and songs, adding their Balearic R&B finesse. Like other outstanding mixtapes of this season (MIA's Vicki Leekx, Polo Club's Don't Believe The Hyper Colour), it's remained close at hand/ear. And the track that's most returned to is 'Believe'. On 'Believe', jj Auto-Tune the US urban diva Nicki Minaj from a radio interview where she finally broke her silence about her beef with Lil Kim. Not only do jj make a bitchy swipe sound sweet (similar to how they made dirty party anthem 'Birthday Sex' sound like a love song when they covered it) but right at the end they slip in a wonky snippet from Abba's 1981 disco 12" 'Lay All Your Love On Me'. Class.

Wanna Shrag?

Brighton, UK's Shrag have managed to avoid being genre-fied over the past few years. They have somehow been left alone to develop their riotous grrrl/boi noise away from fadish sounds that might have seen them swept up, and then just as quickly swept back under the Shrag-pile carpet. A steady flow of singles and downloads culminated in last year's release of their Life! Death! Prizes! album (through Where It's At Is Where You Are). "Ghosts Before Breakfast" is the latest single from the album (singing a sentiment no one would disagree with: "Don't wanna see ghosts before breakfast..."), its punk'd-up Bis-ness being a sidestep away from the lo-fi indie garage of 2010's close-to-breakout-track "Rabbit Kids". The band's label is currently offering the track as part of a free downloadable EP that also includes non-album cuts "Gutless Wonder" and "Heart Open/Mouth Shut" - definitely worth the click through.

Get Down On Bleeding Knees

Queensland's Bleeding Knees Club lost their Virginity when they released a five-track EP of that name a little while back. Not sure how they slipped by for that amount of time because they are now a firm listening favourite - and carpet-burned knees has become a way of life. The two brothers play lo-fi garage punk in the vein of Harlem and Male Bonding, citing the surf punk scene as a primary influence. There's not much more that can be said except to make sure your year doesn't end without experiencing some Knee action. Now signed with the I Oh You mob, you can download some tracks for free or purchase the entire Virginity EP from your local iTunes or some such shop of music sales.

Newly signed to UK's Heavenly label (home to Saint Etienne, The Soft Pack and Edwyn Collins) is Helsinki duo Le Corps Mince De Francois. These Finnish sisters create a baggy pop funk that the label quite rightly compare to Shaun Ryder but their current single 'Gandhi' also recalls the '80s beat-driven pop of King Trigger, Kissing The Pink and Altered Images. There are also obvious nods to the late '90s electropunk scene from which they have arisen. There's an album promised next year and, for now, there are dub'd up reloves by Andrew Weatherall available for you to purchase from your nearest online record store.

Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, founding member of pioneering UK industrial outfit Throbbing Gristle (pictured above, Christopherson on the right) died on Wednesday 24 November, aged 55. Gristle members Chris & Cosey announced the news on their website. After TG broke up in 1981, Christopherson formed another wildly influential band, the psych experimental electropunk band Psychic TV as well as creating more industrial music as Coil. Christopherson later embarked on a career as a music video director, making clips for Marc Almond, Front 242, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against The Machine and Jah Wobble as well as making the Hearts Of Darkness-style-crazed-on-location-in-Sth-America 'Infected' clip for The The. He also made clips for Australian artists Silverchair ('Pure Massacre') and Abba tribute band Bjorn Again ('A Liitle Respect') - TG members were always vocal fans of Abba. As a photographer/designer (working as a part of art collective Hipgnosis), Christopherson designed the covers for the first three Peter Gabriel self-titled albums (known as Car, Scratch and Melt) as well as also being credited for involvement in the artwork of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and Animals - he also created the lesser known, but possibly his best, artwork for Dave Ball's In Strict Tempo. In recent years, Christopherson took part in a TG reformation as well as starting Soisong and recording as The Threshold HouseBoy's Choir.

Cover versions make the world go round. They're familiar, sometimes they're tongue-in-cheek - hey, you can't keep a good song down. Now, I'm as ever-loving and open minded as the next person, but sometimes... sometimes you have to take some cover versions PERSONALLY. Not because the original song is sacred or precious, but because the cover version messes with the original in such a way that it rips apart your musical memory and forever haunts you. Like fingernails down the musical blackboard of your mind.

A later period Smokey Robinson solo song (lifted off his 1979 LP 'Where There's Smoke...'), but hey it's not like Smokey ever really lost his voice.

UK DJ/blogger/tune-editor Leo Zero has been quietly posting edits and remixes online for some time now. He seems willing to tackle any genre or any artist - from Freddie Mercury and Bryan Ferry to Massive Attack and Nas (even Empire Of The Sun). As a promoter he's drawn in the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Bow Wow Wow's David Barborosi and Rusty Egan to play his parties - honouring his wonky dance roots while placing them in a modern context, not just going for a retro bandwagon jump. Zero's own past has involved Chicane (who also spun off A Mountain Of One) and being championed by Idjut Boys and Harvey. In 2004 he caused a buzz with his rework of Lou Reed's 'Satellite Of Love' and last year remixed Zarrylade ('Eyes Above Your Head' was one of last year's slow growers). With more than just a passing nod to the likes of The Associates' Billy MacKenzie, the pop troubadour is king again. Vocal histrionics and pop electronics are bedfellows once more. It could be heard as far back as Antony Hegarty's collaboration with Hercules & Love Affair in 2008 and it's there on Parenthetical Girls' 'Young Throats' from their new Privilege EP. But quite possibly the most likely contender to be passed the late MacKenzie's mantle is Autre Ne Veut. The NY lad's self-titled album (on Olde English Spelling Bee) is non-ironic falsetto, lo-fi R&B electro arrangements and post-Balearica. The album, released last week, was preceded by clips for a few album cuts ('OMG', Soldier') that go some way to indicating what lies ahead but the ten tracks of the self-titled Autre NV album need to be heard in context of each other - just as listening to the entirety of The Associates' Sulk made the seemingly 'novelty' value of MacKenzie's vocals, on the band's singles, make perfect sense.

Harlem hail from Austin. The trio released Hippies, their second album of garage power pop, in April through Matador. The album is a solid set of short, punchy cuts that only proves its worth over time... well, over the past six months anyway. Five months ago Harlem went online with the first of a handful of clips made for tracks from Hippies. Lifting 'Gay Human Bones' was a good choice as its Standells-ish qualities sets Harlem apart from the hip(pie)ster scene and plumps them squarely with fellow music-before-mushrooms types The Soft Pack and Jeff The Brotherhood. It was also a good choice to feature queer Cali rawker Hunx (of Hunx & His Punx and Gravy Train!!!!) in a song called 'Gay Human Bones'. Another clip followed for 'Friendly Ghost', a no-nonsense roller in the early-Elvis (Costello) vein (actually, two clips appeared for the song...). Most recently 'Someday Soon' has been clip'd (this time by Focus Creeps who made Girls' attention-getting 'Lust For Life' clip), highlighting another aspect of the band's sound - Harlem's lo-fi take on the girl group sound of the '50s and '60s.

Simple really, two kids from San Fran make sweet music together. Originally it was just Ryan William Lynch with Dominant Legs but somewhere along the way Hannah Hunt got connected. Not-so-simple is how they acquired a sound that is so steeped in Scotland's Postcard past. Fresh indie nostalgia? Old nu gaze? Lo-fi pastoral pop? Dream folk? Let's not start on all the Arthur Russell comparisons (move along now). And, let's not start on how they were born with names more suited to British children's book authors of the '40s. But look closer, Lynch's day job is as a member of last-big-thing Girls and has this sideline signed to Lefse Records (Neon Indian, Houses). Now the Legs are to deliver their first EP, Young At Love And Life (order here). The four-tracker sounds like a skim through the various stages of Aztec Camera, from the conscious indie 'Clawing Out At The Walls' (Aztecs circa 'Oblivious') to the lush alt.soul of 'About My Girls' (Aztecs circa Love). So Plastic Bertrand has admitted that he didn't sing the vocals on the original recording of his 1977 hit 'Ca Plane Pour Moi'. However, we'll always have Telex's sinister synth version from 1979. Like Bertrand, Telex hailed from Belgium. Unlike Bertrand, the band supplied their own vocals on their recording. Telex's cover can be found on the Looking For Saint Tropez album alongside their hits 'Twist A Saint Tropez', 'Moskow Diskow' and, another cover, 'Rock Around The Clock'.

Don't be fooled into thinking Den Haan is some Norwegian cosmic house DJ who is slumming it with the pop plebs when he remixes Little Boots. Nah uh. Haan is actually the Glasgow-based team of Matthew Aldworth (aka Creme De Menthe of 'Plastique' notoriety) and Andrew Gardiner, two lads who happened to fall in with the Optimo crew while comparing Italo 12"s. Single #1, 'Night Shift/Theme From Den Haan' appeared in '07 on the short-lived Balearic label Dissident (also responsible for releases by The Off-Key Hat and Optimo's Naum Gabo project). Last year they had releases on their own The Courier Of Death label and Optimo Music. [The Courier label name being a nod to the soundtrack of a film they champion - another long, but worthy if true, story altogether.] On the remix front they have been selective and have nailed it each time, discofying The Phenomenal Handclap Band's '15 To 20' and, most recently, Hot Chip's 'I Feel Better'. Now they have unleashed their masterpiece 'Burning Cock Theme', the dark disco track that leads off the De Brandende Haan EP on Supersoul Recordings (the German camp out for blackstrobe). But before you get 'Burning Cock' (you can buy it from Juno) make sure you perve on their past money shots.

The Ghost Of 29 Megacycles - 'Dusted' (Sound & Fury)
This track is off The Ghost Of 29 Megacycles debut album 'Love Via Paper Planes'. Greg self released a bunch of CD-R EP's, but this record was released through Sound & Fury. This particular track was chosen because it is the shortest track on the album, the rest of the album is made up of 10-15 minute tracks. It's an album that is best listened to in isolation.

Craig McElhinney - 'Surfer Realisation' (Meupe)
For me is the stand out track off Craig's 'Loser Orientation' CD-R, released through Meupe. This release is the follow up to Craig's full length album 'You And Me Are Young And Brutal' also released through Meupe. Craig's fairly prolific, playing in heaps of improv based projects around town including WigWam and Splendid Friends. He constantly has new recordings and new projects and his live set seems to evolve every time I see him, his live show is a truly immersive experience.

Cease - 'Three' (Badminton Bandit)
The first time i saw Cease they were playing as a two piece, with long live sets of doomy guitars and sluggish drumming. On this record they have expanded to a three piece. Again this track is the shortest track off the release with the other tracks being around the 10-15 minute mark. Everything just works so well together throughout this release, the beats are awesome and the addition of bass to the band seems to give the tracks more structure and momentum. Released through Perth label Badminton Bandit also responsible for releasing the amazing Mental Powers album. Strongly suggest you buy both, well worth it.

The Wednesday Society - 'Pedant' (independent)
In my opinion these guys are probably one of the most under-appreciated bands in Perth. These were one of the first local bands I used to go see when i was still underage, along with Melange, Hoopers Store and Eleventh He Reaches London. They used to play heaps around town, but now they only play once every few months, if at all. This is a track off their debut and it was well worth the five or so years wait.

Explode Into Colors - 'Sharpen The Knife' (independent)
Nice three piece all girl band from Portland, Oregon. This track is on a tape i got off them titled 'The Sean Rocky Zach & Dekum Tape', which has since sold out. This is a really great song with amazing drumming and a great melodica led melody. They have also released a series of three 7"s through three different labels, Kill Rock Stars, M'Lady and Just For The Hell Of It Records.

Gold Tango - 'Just An Experiment' (Exo)
This track is off the debut EP by this Melbourne trio. Out through the great Melbourne label Exo Records, also home to Melbourne's Bachelor Of Arts and many more. This excellent three track EP and is something we have been listening to heaps. Can't wait to hear more.

Tickley Feather - 'Natural Natural' (Paw Tracks)
Out of somewhere in the U.S., this is a track off Tickley Feather's album out through Animal Collective's label Paw Tracks. The album is basically a collection or home recordings from the past few years, recorded to a 4 track. Rebecca enjoys a lot of this "left-field pop" kind of stuff.

Wind Waker - 'Jerka' (Heartless Robot Productions)
Three piece from Perth. This is a song off their debut EP, recorded by the band's bass player. A really great release out through local label Heartless Robot Productions, who have also put out the Predrag Delibasich 7" and helped fund the amazing 'Three Hams In A Can' documentary. This shows their more post-punky/ surf rock side, their newest songs are heading into a more proggy sound.

Downtown - 'Dumped' (independent)
After trying to get this CD-R for a long time from the band, I finally managed to get hold of a copy while in Melbourne a couple of years back. They are three girls from three different states and for that reason don't play live much. The CD was left for me behind the counter in a bagel shop in Fitzroy (presumably where one of them works). I was given no artwork or track listing, just a white disc with "DOWNTOWN" and a love heart written on in thick artline pen. Nisa from the band also plays in the awesome Fabulous Diamonds, another plays in Wasted Truth and I think another plays in a band called Good God who do a similar sort of thing, although i can't be sure.

New Order - 'Truth' (Factory)
This is from New Order's first album 'Movement', it's the only album I like by them, but seems to be the album that got the worst press. People were saying it just sounded like a worse version of Joy Division, but I don't agree with this. This is a great album and if you have listened to New Order and thought they were average, listen to this album.

Predrag Delibasich - 'The Serpent Bites The Young Lion' (Heartless Robot Productions)
This is the A side of the debut 7" single out through Heartless Robot Productions. Apparently this release was recorded with a cheap computer mic and a free music program. Predrag, or Pex as he is known around town has been involved with a whole bunch of different projects in Perth over the last few years, most of which leans towards the Punk side of things, this is completely the opposite of that, with processed drums and Eastern European folk influenced guitars. This project has evolved over time and is now a full band project smRts with two drummers and three guitarists. This record was limited to 200 copies and is now pretty much sold out.

Erasers have a brand new 7" called 'Autumn' out now on Metal Postcard. Head over to their MySpace for east coast launch/tour dates (don't snooze, they're playing in Melbourne tonight).

And... keep your eyes peeled for a new tape release on US label Solid Melts later in the month.

UK band Archie Bronson Outfit were already one of the most intriguing rock bands around before they hooked up with DFA label founder Tim Goldsworthy to record their latest album. And, their Aus tour a few years back proved they were one of the most intense live rock bands in the world. Their third album Coconut slipped out quietly in March and quite simply is a stunning effort. What's more stunning is that more people aren't shooting their wads over it. Tonight's The Nite Jewel

LA-grounded outfit Nite Jewel is mainly a musical project of Romana Gonzalez with sometime assistance from husband Cole MGN (of Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti), Emily Jane (of The Bubonic Plague) and Corey Lee (aka Corey Lee Granet of The Warlocks). They sound nothing like you'd expect that combo of hipster types to resemble at all. Nite Jewel create a cosmic pop/lo-fi disco hybrid that is sweet. Yep, sweet. First catching attention with the My CD/Your CD release(s) in 2008 which featured the waiting-for-a-Baleric-revival, wonky disco 'Suburbia' - resurfacing as a 7" last year. The Nite Jewel brand has also appeared on two of this year's best remixes: 'Odessa' by Caribou and 'Die Slow' by Health. Now Nite Jewel are offering a free download of 'Tonight', a cover of a track by cult San Fran club enigma Prophet from 1984. Thank them first for such a great song (and gesture) and then, if you've previously been ignorant of Prophet, thank them for making you aware.

There's so much hoo-hah surrounding the reissue of The Rolling Stones' 1972 album Exile On Main Street, it seems like as good time as any to select five favourite Stones' covers that have intrigued over the years. This is not an all-time top five (which would include 'Satisfaction' by Otis Redding, 'As Tears Go By' by Marianne Faithfull and the is-it-a-cover-or-did-they-cover-it 'Wild Horses' by Gram Parsons) nor is it the five craziest covers (coz that would include Jimmy & The Boys' 'Get Off My Cloud'). It's just five randomly selected covers that came to mind and have brought some dance-around-the-lounge-joy at some time or other.

We recently played a show with Woollen Kits and The Twerps who are two of our fave local bands. Each band made each other a mix tape for the night. Rick from The Twerps put this song on his mix and I think it rules. Makes me wanna do burn outs in a beach car park.

The Moffs - 'Another Day in the Sun' (Citadel Records)
Iconic song from this old Aussie band. I think I accidentally ripped off their drum beat in one of our new songs. Woops.

Best Coast - 'Something In The Way' (Post Present Medium)
Another great US band out on No Age's record label. Still a fan of tinny, overblown vocals and big booming drums. This was the kind of sound we wanted for our first EP. Mikey Young who recorded our EP did a darn good job of replicating the noise in our heads.

Meas Samon - Unknown (Sublime Frequencies)
Sublime Frequencies is one of my favourite record labels. They gather cassettes from around Asia and reissue them on comps. This song is real quirky and makes me grin. Off their Cambodian Cassette Archives compilation.

The B-52's - 'Dance This Mess Around' (Warner Bros.)
Best song ever? Could be. Slightly obsessed with this right now .

Super Wild Horses' debut album is due out June/July on Aarght! Records (Australia), and HoZac Records (USA). They're also doing a 7" for round 2 of the HoZac Hookup Klub series.

The Ears In Space

Last August in the midst of the Dogs In Space mania that swept through Melbourne due to the iconic film's release on DVD with companion doco We're Living On Dog Food, '80s art punk ensemble The Ears reformed. The band took to the stage at the Corner (in Richmond, of course, coz that's where the film was set) to commemorate their influence on the new wave, share household film - Dogs In Space was their story, the band at the centre of the film was based on The Ears - Michael Hutchence was portraying their singer Sam Sejavka. The gig was gob-smacking, one of last year's best. The Ears were ferocious and the songs were sounding fresh as they ever did - hey, these were the guys who put the anger in angular (if you shove hard enough, it will fit). Another gig has been announced as The Ears are set to headline a reunion of-sorts for those who used to frequent this city's most important band venue of the '80s, St Kilda's Seaview Ballroom - footage from the venue's heyday almost stole the show in ...Dog Food. With the Ballroom no longer host to gigs of this nature, the Sunday 9 May gig will be at Ding Dong and also on the bill will be legendary mod revivalists Little Murders (and while you're at it, track down the lil '71 comedy they took their name from). Also playing are The Pang (ex members of Blue Ruin, International Exiles and genius Wild Dog Rodeo) and you can expect to see/hear some faces from the Seaview days spinning 7" vinyl on the decks between bands.

San Fran DJ qzen (above) supplies vocals for noddy disco outfit 40 Thieves' cover of Hot Chocolate's 'Don't Turn It Off', which first appeared back in 2008 on Permanent Vacation. The track resurfaced on Chinatown Records last year, remixed by label owner Brennan Green (as heard here on December's Balearic Death Mix), and has sprung to life again thanks to a re-edit included on Greg Wilson's Credit To The Edit Vol 2 (Tirk).

While many have written off UK soul band Hot Chocolate as cod disco, 'Don't Turn It Off' was the band at its super slinky best and appeared on the b-side of their 1979 flop single 'Mindless Boogie'. Commercially it it appeared during a slump period for the band who had enjoyed a string of global hits from '73 to '78 ('Brother Louie', 'Emma', 'So You Win Again', 'I'll Put You Together Again'). Hot Chocolate's mainstream comeback, that made them household names, didn't happen until '82 with 'Girl Crazy', damning them to the casino circuit for eternity. Yeah, they could be schmaltzy ('It Started With A Kiss') and sound like they were cranking out jingles ('Every1's A Winner') but it's hard to deny they could sex it up with the best of them when they set their crotches to it ('Heaven's In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac').

NY team Rub'N'Tug recognised the sultry nature of 'Don't Turn It Off' and included it on their seminal '05 mix set Campfire. An early morning seduction anthem was born. And the song fit 40 Thieves like a condom. Comprising qzen (ex-The Invisibles), Corey Black (Imperial Dub label manager), Jay Williams (Jaswho?) and Layne Fox (engineer on Woolfy's The Warehouse), 40 Thieves followed up their 'Life Is Special' 12" (Rong) with 'Don't Turn It Off' and there's just no getting tired of what could well be a modern disco classic. And the track was the perfect lead-in to last year's 'Beats In Space' 12" (Rong) of edits that shows they can do flamboyant disco too on 'Love To Shake It Baby'.

I Still Play Vinyl Because...

A few years back lots of people were talking about the death of vinyl, except now it's 2010 and black data discs are still not dead. In fact, it looks like vinyl might be making a comeback. Could it be true? People always bang on about how good vinyl sounds (and looks), but what's the real reason DJs still play records?

"I still play vinyl, because... "

- my Mum wont let me use her credit card on Beatport.

- it's a good opportunity to borrow the house needles and swap my old styli over.

- I can't get enough of trolly bags with telescopic handles.

- turntables make me feel nostalgic, plus they're a handy place for me to rest my drinks.

- when I'm famous, a framed gold USB stick wont look as good hanging in my toilet.

- I love the sound of oxidized SL1200 headshell inputs.

Death Of A Disco Dancer – Malcolm McLaren R.I.P.

Malcolm McLaren died 8 April at age 64. The Guardian's obituary put it best, describing him as "a musical provocateur". The infamous Brit encouraged and made music that didn't just provoke a response, it demanded a response. Although best know for his punk shenanigans (the street fashion store he had with Vivienne Westwood, taking on the monarchy with Sex Pistols, briefly managing New York Dolls), McLaren always had an interest in dance music. The first sign was 'Black Arabs', the ironic disco medley of Sex Pistols songs on The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle soundtrack - it was 'Pistols On 45'. Always an early adapter, at the start of the '80s he stole Adam Ant's band to bring the Burundi drum rhythm to the new wave sound of Bow Wow Wow, a pirate-meets-cassette explosion of post-punk club music. Then in '83 came McLaren's first real solo musical project Duck Rock, a mesh of African music and hip hop (working with pop producer Trevor Horn and electropop pioneer Thomas Dolby), which featured global hit 'Buffalo Gals'. In '84, he followed with the electronica opera album Fans, which featured another global hit in 'Madame Butterfly'. In '89 McLaren mixed classical music with house for Waltz Darling - collaborating with Bootsy Collins and early UK house advocates Mark Moore and William Orbit - including another global hit 'Deep In Vogue'. He continued to make music but never again reached the apogee of this late '80s dance triptych.

Pair-shaped Past: Neighbourhood Watch Edition

Two of the most exciting/unpredictable acts to take to the stage in Melbourne during the '80s were The Shower Scene From Psycho (above) and Tombstone Hands. Shower Scene were all shrill electropunkcabaret covers (they tackled The Monkees, The Seekers, Mental As Anything amongst a myriad of others from a variety of genres) while Tombstone Hands were a swampy garage precursor to the grunge scene. Nothing in common musically but they shared local cult hero guitar thrasher "Feedback Jack" Bloom (above centre). Psycho have since become the thing of myth: one member embroiled in tabloid scandal due to his family's political connections; singer Simon Grounds mutating into underground producer extraordinaire (God, Underground Lovers, Dave Graney, etc); and the band recently immortalised with a two-cd retrospective. However there is little to be found of the Hands outside of a good old rummage through you friendly neighbourhood vinyl shop. Here's a little reminder of why both bands deserve even more respect. Clips of both bands filmed live in the mid-'80s: the Hands covering The Standells' 'Good Guys Don't Wear White' (swoon at Jack's gravity-defying mohawk) at the Prince Of Wales (circa 1984) and Shower Scene covering The Strangeloves' 'Cara-lyn' at, what looks like, Melbourne's then uber-hip/midweek late niter Users Club (circa 1986):

You should look for this: Asleep At The Wheel - Various (a 1984 collection of garagesque Melbourne acts including Tombstone Hands, Crushed Buzzards and Olympic Sideburns that could be kicking around in record stores somewhere).

LA's Dam-Funk can usually be found purveying nouveaux soul and boogie on Stones Throw Records or DJing at his hometown boogie funk night Funkmosphere. But last week he dropped his contribution for the Dr Martens 50th anniversary campaign - which involves ten directors shooting clips for ten participating artists' covers. The grand Dam has chosen to digitise the funk out of/into The Human League's 1981 synthpop standard 'The Things That Dreams Are Made Of' - and it sounds how you'd kinda expect it to, like Dolby's Cube let loose to make a teen movie theme in Paisley Park. [FYI, other acts involved in the Doc covers project include The Duke Spirit covering Sham 69; Buraka Som Sistema covering Neneh Cherry; The Raveonettes covering The Stone Roses.] For Dam's effort he was paired with clip maker Ace Norton who has previously made vids for LCD Soundsystem ('Big Ideas'), Mickey Avalon ('Jane Fonda'), Patrick Wolf ('Hard Times') and Sebastien Tellier ('Divine'). Death Of A Disco Dancer – Lawrence Cassidy R.I.P.

Only just read in The Independent that unsung UK post-punker Lawrence Cassidy passed away age 56 on 27 February. Cassidy formed the band Section 25 in Blackpool in 1978 - by 1980 they were not only signed to the legendary Factory label but their debut single 'Girls Don't Count' was co-produced by Ian Curtis. The track featured the dark and stark sound of the UK's trenchcoat brigade which led to them often being seen as Joy Division also-rans - an unfair generalisation:

But after an album in a similar vein, Always Now produced by Martin Hannett, they moved in a more electro/club direction and began recording with Bernard Sumner. The band also recruited women into the line-up, including Cassidy's wife Jenny (who died in 2004). Section 25 were transformed into a funkily-driven sound yet still draped in an enigmatic moodiness. And, like all Factory bands their history has become shrouded in myths: like New Order, one of their releases had artwork designed by Peter Saville that required such intricate manufacturing that it couldn't possibly make money; The Smiths' Johnny Marr was asked to join the band in 1983, etc... The band had recently reformed to play live shows (including gigs with Peter Hook that saw them covering Joy Division songs). '90s dance fans may also know Section 25 for being sampled by Orbital and The Shamen. The song both artists bit from was 'Looking From A Hilltop':

Warning: The Following Features Bones

UK artist Ebony Bones' Bone Of My Bones album has been on rotation on-and-off in my notebook for a few weeks now (it's finally getting an Aus release thru Shock). And every listen changed what I thought about it. Impressive or too late on the Santigold bandwagon? First there was the whacky image to contend with - Ms Bones (born Ebony Thomas) looks like Lene Lovich threw up on MIA... could too much thought be going into image instead of sound? Then there was the past - she once starred in bad UK soap Family Affairs (it was really really awful... and I like my UK soaps). But hey, even the great singer Sheila Chandra started in Grange Hill. But in the end, it was the way Bones evoked a style of '80s rhythmic electrofunk that won over. Not for her the typical '80s influences but rather something more akin to the likes of Pigbag, King Trigger or Rip Rig & Panic - it probably helps that The Damned's drummer Rat Scabies works on music with her. Supposedly she is working on an album with the Symphony Orchestra Of India and that at least has to be interesting. You can get an idea from the below clip, for The Muzik, that came out last year just before she blew up at SxSW - ah well, better late than never on the bandwagon at all.

When my parents moved house in the early 90s they lost their record room. My Dad's stereo system made the move, but it was never plugged in and set-up. By this time my sisters and I had well and truly won the battle of the family sound systems. We each had our own stereos, where we played our own music, at our own volume and at our own time. Coincidently a few of Dad's records started relocating downstairs into my collection. Bob Dylan was one of the first migrants. My Dad didn't have his classic early albums (the ones the rock magazines told you to buy), but it turns out he did have quite a few of his mid-period LPs (the ones internet sites tell you to buy now). Dylan was mainly electric and Christian in our household. He sounded romantic, faraway and nasally to my ears, and I kind of liked it.

I was going to pick 'Lay Lady Lay', but I also really like 'Girl From The North Country'. It has that guy that made the prison record singing on it.

Al Chem - Something To Remember The Noughties By

It's taken a while for the magical powers of Berlin's Al Chem to enchant me - but the spell is finally working. The dubtronica folky evokes memories of 'The Man In The Black Sedan' by Snakefinger (1983) with 'No Hopper', a track that first surfaced on a Tummy Touch compilation back in 2004. Also recording as Alexander Christou, not a lot seems to have been released under his Chem guise. 'No Hopper' resurfaced on Tummy Touch honcho Tim Love Lee's set for the Coming Home series in '07 but the only other Chem to be got at that time was 'The Ladder Of Perfection' on the Berlin Insane lll comp (which also featured Marc Almond, Taylor Savvy and Whitey amongst other artistes that are too odd to garner wide attention). But listening to'No Hopper' now, it seems perfectly suited to the psyBalearic disco sounds that are currently circulating in the cosmos. Listen, watch, listen again...

Howard's band The Birthday Party changed my life. Their final show was the first gig I went to in Melbourne. As a street press hack, Howard was one of the first people I ever interviewed. I was starstruck. For me, his version of 'Some Velvet Morning' (with Lydia Lunch) is the greatest ever recorded. More recently, his album Pop Crimes was sensational. And his gig at last year's All Tomorrow's Parties was a festival highlight. And, of course, he wrote what is one of the all-time greatest Australian songs - 'Shivers'.

'Christmas Wrapping' is still the best Xmas song ever recorded. Originally intended for NY disco punk ZE Records label's compilation A Christmas Record in 1981, the song by The Waitresses (who hit in Aus with 'I Know What Boys Like' in 1982) became a UK hit the following holiday season. The track has since been covered by Spice Girls, The Donnas, Kate Nash and Save Ferris plus there's a live version by data Panik (formely Bis) kicking around. But what better way to pay tribute to the original version than to be mesmerised by Xmas lights.

A reconstruction of The Beach Boys' lost LP 'SMiLE' (the album that was going to be the follow up to 'Pet Sounds'). Based upon the track listing of Brian Wilson's 2004 re-recorded/finished version, and compiled from commercially released tracks from the original sessions, plus a bunch of 1967-era bootlegs. It's probably a little sacrilicous, but I think Ryan Marks does a pretty good job reconstructing what could have been.

This has been floating around the interwebs for a little while, but hey - it's the thought that counts.

Another crackly piece of vinyl that has seen better days. The cover of this LP is also going mouldy, so it's joined the 'pile of shame' quarantine area in my record room. The British Invasion might have been a big deal in other record collections, but not much of it made it into our household. In fact, I think this is the only Invasion record that made it. My Dad has one album by The Beatles, but it's 'The Beatles Again' (a 1970 compilation) and I don't think that counts. The line-up on this album features a young Steve Winwood - not that the name rang many bells when i was growing up. I did think it was kind of amusing he had a relation (older brother) in the band called Muff though. Muff went onto to be a producer and A&R guy. He was responsible for twiddling the knobs on Dire Straits' debut album, but managed to redeem himself by signing The Psychedelic Furs and Sade to Columbia Records in the early 80s.
